The music on this album is my stylistic interpretation of selections from "the Order of the Holy Communion" in "the Lutheran Hymnal," published in 1941. Many of these tunes actually go back much further than that, however, to the time of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation.

This is the order of worship that we followed every other week in the congregation I grew up in, as it was in thousands of congregations around the United States. It is still used in many churches to this day.

My purpose in recording these tunes is not to improve upon them, nor to make any sort of doctrinal or political statement. I have recorded them for my enjoyment as well as for yours and, most importantly, to give praise to the Almighty. In the words of one famous Lutheran musician and composer, J.S. Bach, "Soli Deo Gloria (to God alone be the glory)."

"The Lutheran Hymnal is intended for use in church, school, and home. The committee entrusted with the task of compiling and editing has earnestly endeavored to produce a hymnal containing the best of the hymnodical treasures of the Church, both as to texts and tunes, in accord with the highest standards of Christian worship. It is our sincere prayer that these treasures may be cherished by God's people wherever the English tongue is used in public or private worship. We have freely used whatever we found of value and, by way of acknowledgment, have carefully indicated all sources. In turn, we freely offer for the use of others all original contributions or translations made by the committee as such or by its individual members.
"'Unto Him that loves us and washed us from our sins in His own blood and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father: to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen.'

"The Intersynodical Committee on Hymnology and Liturgics for the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America"

Track Name: Gloria Patri/The Kyrie/The Gloria in Excelsis
Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father
And to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

The Kyrie

Lord have mercy upon us,
Christ have mercy upon us,
Lord have mercy upon us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory be to God on high:
And on earth
Peace, good will toward men.

We praise Thee,
We bless Thee,
We worship Thee,
We glorify Thee,
We give thanks to Thee,
For Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heavenly King,
God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son,
Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father,

That takest away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world,
Receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,
Have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy;
Thou only art the Lord.
Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father.
Track Name: The Offertory
The Offertory

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;
And uphold me with Thy free spirit.
Track Name: The Sanctus/The Lord's Prayer
The Sanctus

Holy, holy,
Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth
Heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory;
Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He, Blessed is He,
Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna in the highest.

(Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil)

For Thine is the kingdom
And the power
And the glory forever and ever, Amen.
Track Name: The Agnus Dei
O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,
That takest away the sins of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,
That takest away the sins of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that
Takest away the sins of the world,
grant us Thy peace.

Track Name: The Nunc Dimmitis
Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant
Depart in peace
According to Thy word,
For mine eyes have seen Thy Salvation:
Which Thou hast prepared before
The face of all people,
A light to lighten the Gentiles
And the Glory of Thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father
And to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
World without end.
